There's no one right way of doing anything where writing is concerned, but, from my perspective, linking devices (a place, objects, suggested genealogical links between characters) played an important role in holding the novel together as an integrated whole. Attempting one that has its roots in the War of 1812 but impacts through two World Wars to the present day.Lot of research - not easy stuck in Snowdonia, but internet helps.
